Svaz českých filatelistů  The history of philatelic literature from the territory of the present Czechia...

The history of philatelic literature from the territory of the present Czech Republic has already been published several times. The most recent work on this topic appeared in the Specialized Catalogue of Czechoslovak Postage Stamps issued on occasion of the World Philatelic Exhibition PRAGA 1978. However, it is incomplete and contains errors. I regret that even the present compilation, commemorating the 137th anniversary of the issuance of the first philatelic periodican in the present Czech territory, has not achieved completeness. The reason is simply that all reference I know of are no longer available, as the oldest periodicals may not have survived. How to complete the current listing of philatelic journals from our territory? In my opinion, the only way is to publish this knowledge, collected over twenty years of study and to ask the philatelic community for help. Any detail, any comment and citing of yet unknown titles would be welcome and would serve to complete the listing which follows. It is very hard indeed to assemble all these facts - for even the Prague Postal Museum does not posses a number of these title, especially those of the oldest period and of local origin. Help could be obtained from libraries all over the world, in particular from the U.S. philatelic libraries where, as I hope, some titles could have been saved by immigrant waves of Czechs. Substantial help could also come from the American Philatelic Research Library (APRL), Union of German Philatelists (BDPh), ArGe Tschechoslowakei, Union of Austrian Philatelic Societies (VOPV), Union of Polish Philatelists (PZF) and Union of Slovak Philatelists (ZSF).

The author recently contacted libraries, primarily in Europe and in particular those in Germany (Hamburg, Leipzig, Munich). Nevertheless, there may be some unknown volumes in libraries of philatelic societies and clubs where people do not know of their existence. In some instances (given in the last section of listing) it was even impossible to find out such important data as the year(s) of issue.I do not list all of my resources but all information listed is supported by references. This bibliography does not contain titles issued in Slovakia - part of former Czechoslovakia. This is first of all due to the fact that also there a large amount of data is missing, expecially those for the oldest period. I am prepared to cooperate in such an overview, but the major work would have to be carried out by Slovak philatelists.

This bibliography will be permanently placed on the page of  „Japhila - Philatelic e-zine" ( http://www.japhila.cz/  ) and will be updated on-line as frequently as possible. Printed versions will be submitted to publishers of philatelic journals in the Czech Republic, Germany, USA (APRL, SCP) and Slovakia, so as to collect and disseminate information to those collectors who do not have internet access. Further help will be welcome as will be the spreading of information.
