A new cancel group very similar to the one shown under 8) but now with a 2
figure year was introduced in 1894 both in domestic and foreign post offices and
was used until substituted by the Comb Type handstamp in 1905.
Many varieties have been found and because of the numerous items I want to
present I divide this section into domestic, Korean, Chinese cancels.

This cover came up
in the December 2000 Takahashi auction in Tokyo and nobody paid much
attention to it. It is not a nice cover, but look at the year! It is
the first time that a cover from Ninsen with Meiji years in a Medium
Single Circle cancellation has been found. Previously Meiji years in
Medium Single Circles were known from the Japanese cities of Kobe,
Nagasaki and Tokyo only. 1896 was the year 29 of the Meiji era. What a
lucky find! I put it under my Christmas tree!
