Knihtisk - The Typographic Stamps of CSR
The original Knihtisk website, by Dr. Mark Wilson, has been replaced by a
newer and better version! -
http://www.knihtisk.org/ The entire site has been reorganized
into sections dealing with each of the issues. Also, because many visitors
complained about the size of the images in the old site, every image in
the new site -- more than 7,000 of them -- has been individually massaged
into a consistent size and lighter weight. By the way, there are 11,281
files on the site of which 7994 are pictures. Of the 11, 281 files, only
800 are slow (take more than 30 sec to load on a slow connection), 62,596
hyperlinks on the site, all but 25 are internal! This site has nice and
clean design and looks great! Please have a look, its an incredible source
of information, scans, all about "The Typographic Stamps of CSR"! Good
luck Mark!

meetings the Dutch "Vereniging voor Tsjechoslowakije-Filatelie"
As indicated in earlier messages and at our meetings the Dutch "Vereniging
voor Tsjechoslowakije-Filatelie" has the plan to participate in the yearly
exhibition POSTEX in Apeldoorn this year.First let me tell you something
about POSTEX and Apeldoorn: Dates are: October 19th (Friday) until 21st (Sunday).
Frames can be filled from Thursday October 18th at 4pm. Official opening
is on Friday at 10 am so everything has to be in the frames at that time. The
exhibition closes on Sunday at 4pm after which time the frames can be
emptied. It exhibition will be held in the Americahal. There is more than
enough parking space. During the exhibition there will be 4 specialist
societies who will have special exhibitions: -Czechoslovakia (us)-Eastern-Europe
(they cover everything from Poland until Bulgaria + Russia)-France-Germany
(interesting for the Germany collectors among you) The exhibition is
visited by about 2500 people. There are a lot of dealers present. Look at
www.postex.info There is
catering present at the exhibition days. There is a good hotel, called De
Cantharel which offers reasonable prices. A certain
number of rooms there have been pre-booked by the organizers. Guests can
mention "Poste" or "Mr. Louwerse" when booking, but are responsible for
their own booking. They should not forget to make a booking for dinner as
well, otherwise the restaurant might be full. We plan on organizing a get-together
in the evening (probably Saturday) at some stage. If we decide to hold
this outside the hotel, it will be easy enough to cancel the dinner
booking. Guests wishing a more upscale hotel can get into the Hotel
Keizerskroon. Since the region is a tourist region there will be plenty B&Bs as well, but because the weekend
is in a school holiday reservations are necessary The region is a tourist
region. The town Apeldoorn has a royal palace (with beautiful gardens) and
a monkey zoo (Apenheul). South of the town is the National Park "De Hoge
Veluwe". About 25 kms away is Deventer, a former Hanze-city with
historical town centre. Our society has applied for about 80-100 frames.
Frames hold 12 pages (like in Germany) of standard album size. They can
hold 15 standard A4 sheets. We would like to invite you (our sister-societies
from Germany and Great-Britain) to each fill about 25 frames. We are
thinking about inviting 1 or 2 collectors from the Czech Republic to
participate as well. Although they have expressed interest we are not
thinking of inviting the Americans because of customs problems. In this way
I think we could give a good overview to the public about Czechoslovak
Philately. Exhibits will not be judged unless the participant wants this.
In that case they will be judged by the Dutch society according to the
Dutch rules either in rank 3 (no pre-qualification) or rank 2 (pre-qualification
needed). The German and Dutch Philatelic Societies recognize results
achieved in the other country for pre-qualification.If possible we would
like to know by March 1st of your society is willing to participate with
about 25 frames in this
exhibition. We would like to have the application forms by April 15th,
after which we will let you know which exhibits have been accepted by May
15th. An application form is attached to this message.Application forms
should be sent to my address only and not directly to the organizers. Our
society will have an information stand, where we will have space to
receive and meet fellow collectors. We will be able to sell literature
there (Arge and CPSGB Monographs?). At the exhibition there will be no
further society meeting, since there is no decent room at a desired moment
There will however be lectures staged by the Dutch Philatelic Society. We
do intend to have an evening meeting somewhere in Apeldoorn, but we can
only plan this when we know how many people will be there. We sincerely
hope that your society is willing to participate and are looking forward
to your application. If anything remains unclear, please do not hesitate

CZECH POSTAL
AGENCIES 1900 – 1958
from Petr GEBAUER, Brno, Czechia:
http://www.japhila.cz/hof/0174/index0174a.htm
Postal agencies were small postal places opened when postal services were
needed but a post office would not be profitable. The agency was managed
by a reliable local citizen. Postal agencies were equipped with handstamps
were placed aside of the stamps on covers and other mail. Owing to the
small extent of mail and other factors is the collecting of agency
handstamps a very difficult task; many handstamps are known in one or
several items only and a number of them have not been found yet. Postal
agencies existed unofficially already before 1900, officially they were
introduced in 1900 by the Austrian posts. They were continued under
Czechoslovak administration as well as under the German posts during 1938
- 1945. They ended under the Czechoslovak posts in 1958. The exhibit
consists of 10 frames; the first 6 frames document the kinds of used handstamps
and postal services for the individual postal administrations and times
periods, the last 4 frames show special areas of postal agency collecting:
1. Austrian postal agencies 1900 - 1918; 2. Austrian agency handstamps
used 1918 - 1924; 3. Czechoslovak postal agencies 1919 - 1939; 4. German
postal agencies 1938 - 1945; 5. Postal agencies in Bohemia and Moravia
1939 - 1945; 6. Czechoslovak postal agencies 1945 - 1958; 7. Letter agency
handstamps; 8. Postal agency buildings; 9. Local
post from postal agencies; 10. Agencies in Forced Labour Camps 1938 -
1945.

Washington 2006 Exhibition Distributes Quarter Million Dollar Surplus
As Seed Money for 2016, Matching Grant to APS and Educational Gifts.
Washington 2006 issued its final show report at its Board of Directors
meeting at APS Stampshow in Chicago and announced that the world
philatelic exhibition had not only received many accolades, but also had
achieved a surplus of more than one quarter million dollars. President
Michael D. Dixon stated that the surplus reflected the fact that
significant contributions had been made by more than 600 individual and
society members who had provided the seed money for Washington 2006. "We
believe we were able to meet all our expenses and preserve most, if not
all, the individually contributed funds." He said the Executive Committee
recommended that the Board of Directors vote to reinstate past practices
to provide seed money for the next international stamp show in the US and
to support educational projects. The directors voted to distribute the
initial surplus funds of just over a quarter million dollars to provide
$100,000 in seed money to New York 2016 and $75,000 to the American
Philatelic Society as matching funds in its fund raising campaign to move
the Headsville post office from the Smithsonian to the American Philatelic
Center in Bellefonte, PA. They also voted five gifts totaling $90,000 for
various educational projects. The directors approved taking the necessary
legal steps to discontinue the Washington Philatelic Exhibition
corporation within one year and by August 2007 turn over any additional
remaining funds to the American Philatelic Society. The educational
support was provided in the following way: Smithsonian National Postal
Museum -- $25,000 gift in support of philatelic programs. These include
the ARAGO system which will enable collectors throughout the world to
access the NPM collections for study and information from their own homes.
The on-line system was introduced at Washington 2006. Washington 2006 had
also provided in-kind services to the NPM during the show with a value of
more than $40,000. Stamp Camp USA -- $50,000 to support this initiative in
youth stamp education, which had been organized initially in Pennsylvania
with the support of the US Postal Service. It proved to be an effective
program with youngsters at Washington 2006. NAPEX--$5,000 to support this
national stamp show's youth educational program. NAPEX provided many of
the volunteer chairpersons for Washington 2006. Virginia Philatelic
Federation and Springfield Stamp Club -- $5,000 each to augment their
youth educational programs. Both organizations and the American Philatelic
Society lent Washington 2006 their exhibit frames, thus helping to reduce
show costs. The directors also voted to transfer ownership of the 1800 new
A-frames (900 units), purchased by Washington 2006 for $80,000, to the
American Philatelic Society. The 1500 pole frames which had been received
from the Royal Philatelic Society Canada have been transferred to the
Federación InterAmericana de Filatelia. FIAF has distributed them to
federations in this hemisphere. Several of these federations had no frames
and as a result had never held a national exhibition. Others had frames so
old that they were nearly unusable. For additional information, write to
Washington 2006, PO Box 2006, Ashburn , VA 20146-2006, or see the web site

DID YOU KNOW?
A somewhat unusual but nevertheless worthy exhibit has made its way to
EXPONET, virtual international exhibit, visible on
www.japhila.cz/hof/0113/index0113a.htm
It is a single frame exhibit depicting the Second International Philatelic
Literature Exhibit "EXPRINLIPH" held in conjunction with the well known
PRAGA'1938 exhibition. Bretislav Janik's exhibit shows pages from the
catalogue, lists the organizers and Patrons, and is presented in several
world languages. But he raises a serious question to which he seeks an
answer from our readers. It is: "Where did the FIRST International
Literature exhibit take place?". If you know the answer, please contact Mr..
Janik directly by e-mail at janik@japhila.com

International Exhibition of the Philatelic Press and Literature
OK, but where are 1st international exhibition? The first international
association of the philatelic press was, the FIPP (Federation
International de La Press Philatelique) founded in Italy by Giulio
Tedeschi in 1927. The members were informed about the specialist
publications with almost 200 bulletins worldwide intil 1938. World
conventions took place in Le Havre (1929), Antwerp (1930), Brunswick
(1931), Vienna (1933) and in Brussels (1935). The political situation at
the time and the Second World War prevented the further development of
this early association."

The Dutch are coming back
Exhibiting at the Collector Trade Fair last year for the first time was
the Netherlands company World Coins International from Huizen, which is
one of the world’s leading wholesale companies in the area of modern
collectable coins. This year, visitors will again find them at the same
place.
In accordance with tradition, the Austrian firm Schoeller Münzhandel from
Vienna will have the biggest exposition at the trade fair. At its stand it
will be representing ten world mints.

UN Day on Sunday
Traditionally, Sunday at the trade fair has belonged to the United Nations
Organization. The organizers declare it as UN Day, and a commemorative UN
rubberstamp is available for collectors at the stand of the Czech Post.
For the duration of the trade fair, postcards for the Collector Trade Fair
will be on sale at the stand of the United Nations Postal Administration,
and a cachet will be available. The UNPA has been a participant at the
Collector Trade Fair every year since the very beginning and is one of the
fifteen exhibitors that have not missed a single year’s trade fair in the
nine years of its existence. They deserves our thanks, since at the fair’s
premiere in 1998, they could not have known what they were getting into
with us. It is also thanks to them that the Collector Trade Fair in Prague
has over time grown to its current large dimensions and has become the
biggest collector’s event in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.

About the fair
The trade fair is traditionally held in the Industrial Palace at the
Exhibition Grounds in Prague 7 - Holesovice on the northern edge of the
capital’s centre. The journey by tram or metro from the very heart of the
city takes ten minutes. Metro line C (station Nadrazi Holesovice) and
trams 5, 12, 14, 15 and 17 go to the exhibition grounds. Admission prices
for the trade fair: one-day ticket CZK 60 and a ticket for all three days
costs CZK 100. The entry ticket is also good for the trade fair
Antikvariat Praha. Both trade fairs are open to the public on Friday and
Saturday from 10:00 to 18:00, and on Sunday from 10:00 to 16:00. We
recommend that those visitors who arrive late utilise the HAPPY HOUR. On
Friday and Saturday from 16:00, and on Sunday from 14:00, the admission
price to the trade fair will be a flat CZK 20. Women and young people up
to the age of eighteen have free admission to the trade fair. For young
visitors, the already proven “preparatory course for future collectors”
will be prepared. Updated list of exhibitors as of 1 August 2006 Look at:

Slovak Post first time with its own stand
Among the participants this year for the
first time at the Collector international trade fair to be held in Prague
on 15 – 17 September will be the Slovak Post with its own stand. Slovak
Post employs the finest Slovak designers, so it is no surprise that Slovak
stamps, FDCs and other philatelic materials are very popular, and not only
with Czech philatelists. For example, a stamp issued last year from the
art series Dinner at Emmaus by Rembrandt van Rijn was chosen as the most
beautiful Slovak stamp.
Jindrich Jirasek 11.5.2006 |
Exhibitor from Argentina
Mr. Juan N. Simona of Buenos Aires will be coming to the Prague fair for
the second time. He is among the most famous philatelic merchants in
Argentina, and he has been a postage stamp dealer for over thirty years.
In Prague, he will be selling not only Argentinean stamps including the
latest issues, but also contemporary stamps from around the world, letters,
envelopes, postcards and other material.
Jindrich Jirasek 11.5.2006 |
AIJP at the trade fair
This year’s trade fair will pay special attention to the World Association
of the Authors and Journalists in Philately (AIJP). That organization
brings together many outstanding journalists involved with philately both
from a specialist’s perspective and with the aim of its popularization.
Among its Czech members is for example Mr. Miroslav Langhammer. Late last
year, the publisher Pofis released his beautifully illustrated work
Filatelie je víc ne¾ známky (Philately is More than Stamps) for young and
beginner philatelists.
Jindrich Jirasek 11.5.2006 |
H. D. Rauch plans to return to Prague
Among the regular exhibitors at the fair is the Austrian auction house H.
D. Rauch from Vienna. Rauch regularly holds philatelic and numismatic
auctions. Collectors can also buy many items over the internet, including
postage stamps, coins, honorary decorations or medals. Dukát, a coin shop
in Brno, will again be at the Collector fair. Among other activities,
Dukát also organizes auctions of numismatic materials.
Jindrich Jirasek 11.5.2006 |
Promotional materials on the fair
For this year’s Collector international trade fair, the organizer has
issued a size A2 poster (see the picture), a brochure in Czech, and a
foreign language brochure (English, German, French, Russian and Polish).

Popular postal services are coming back to
Prague Fair Collector
Swiss Post has taken a liking to the fair. They will participate at
COLLECTOR this year (to be held on 15 – 17 September in Prague) for the
third time in a row. The Swiss issue very interesting stamps and post
cards/envelopes with printed postage stamps that attract much interest
among the fair’s visitors. Among the record holders in terms of numbers of
participants are the Australian Post and the Irish Post. Both of these
postal services have had exhibits at the fair continuously since the first
annual fair in 1998. Naturally, they will not be absent this year either.

Aix-phila will have an even bigger
offering
Fifty German philatelic auction houses achieve an annual turnover in the
hundreds of millions of Euros. One of the best known German auction houses
is the firm Aix-phila from Aachen, another traditional exhibitor at the
Prague fair. Founded in 1987, Aix-phila has been participating at the
COLLECTOR fair from the very beginning, and each year its participation
has grown. This year it is preparing an even bigger offering for visitors
than it had last year.
Jindrich Jirasek 5.4.2006 |
Chinese telephone card at the fair
For the international fair COLLECTOR the Chinese telecommunications firm
China Tietong (CTT) in Hunan Province is releasing a limited issue of 300
prepaid phone cards (see the picture). The card number is CTT-2006-197200-17,
its face value is 10 Yuan RMB, and the issue date is 1 March 2006. The
card (with an airplane of Czech Airlines) will be available in limited
quantities at the fair.
Jindrich Jirasek 5.4.2006 |
Coins from around the world at the fair
The fair Collector is a Mecca for collectors of modern coins and for
people who want to invest in coins. The Austrian Mint has traditionally
had a large stand at the fair, along with several other mints, starting
with the Royal Canadian Mint and finishing with mints from Australia, for
example.

Lindner once again in Prague
Lindner Falzlos, a German maker of aids for philatelists and other
collectors, will again be at this year’s fair. Founded in 1947 by August
Lindner, since the start of the year the company’s management has passed
on to what is now the fourth generation of Lindners. Right from the start,
the firm has been known for its unique stamp protection system, from which
over the years it has developed the famous Lindner-T-System, which is
still used with success.

A perfect offering of motifs
Since this year’s Collector trade fair does not conflict with the Stampex
fair in London, the Dutch philatelic dealer Wim van der Bijl from Utrecht
is returning to Prague after a year’s absence. His stand always attracts
lots of visitors, and it’s no wonder. He amazes fair visitors with his
perfectly prepared offering of motifs. Instead of just offering stamps,
books of stamps or postcards/envelopes with pre-printed stamps broken down
into categories like cars etc., he has them grouped as Ford, Volkswagen,
FIAT etc., helping customers find what they are looking for very quickly.
Jindrich Jirasek 5.4.2006 |
Bill Barell is coming back
This year, Bill Barell from Lincolnshire, a well known expert on the
history of the postal system and stamps in Great Britain, is taking
advantage of how nicely the Stampex fair in London ties in with the
Collector international trade fair in Prague. This year at the fair to
held in Prague on 15 – 17 September, he will have an exhibit together with
David Morrison, who will be exhibiting, among other things, envelopes from
shipwrecks and mail from railway accidents.
Jindrich Jirasek 5.4.2006 |
UNPA every year
The United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) in Vienna has participated
each year at the Collector international trade fair since the first annual
fair in 1998. It considers the fair to be a prestigious event in Central
Europe, both from an organizational standpoint and in terms of attendance
levels. For each event it issues a so-called white card with a Prague
motif. Sunday at the fair is always declared to be UN Day, and the Czech
Postal Service uses a special postmark for the occasion. Naturally, this
year will be no different.
Jindrich Jirasek 5.4.2006 |
Euronumix is satisfied
Last year the company Euronumix from Düsseldorf participated at the fair
for the first time. They offered coins from Monaco, San Marino and Vatican
City and they were successful. This year, Euronumix is returning to Prague.
Last year they made their own photographic documentation of the Collector
fair which devoted to the organizer of the fair.
Jindrich Jirasek 5.4.2006 |
Minerals and jewelry to add
variety to the fair
Each year, minerals from around the world and jewelry made with precious
stones add to the variety of the fair. It is especially the wives of
visitors and collectors who will be making a real dent in their husbands’
wallets at gem dealers’ exhibits. Such traditional exhibitors as Mineral
Metal, Lubo¹ Poděbradskı, Jiří ©palek, Jaroslav Hyr¹l and new exhibitors
like Jiří ©edı – Probika will be represented at the fair this year.
Jindrich Jirasek 5.4.2006 |
Premiere of an Italian company
This year, the Italian company SEPA s.r.l. from the city of Faenza will be
participating for the first time. The company manufactures accessories for
philatelists and numismatists. Founded in 1963, the company was originally
involved mainly with collecting, manufacturing and dealing in albums for
coins, bank notes, postcards and other collectibles. Gradually, however,
the company has expanded its activities into such new areas as paper goods,
office supplies and publicity matter.
Jindrich Jirasek 5.4.2006 |
Czech philatelic dealers are
gearing up
Czech philatelic dealers are also getting ready for the Collector trade
fair. Among those already registered are Filatelie Karlin, Filatelie
Onager, Artphila, Filatelie Podskalskı, Filatelie Hobby, Alkado and Qarta.
At the fair, the demand among both Czech and foreign collectors is strong
for high-quality philatelic material. According to a survey taken in 2004,
every seventh visitor to the fair is from abroad. The fair’s organizers
will repeat the survey this year.

Important message of the fair
organizer to exhibitors
In addition to many other firms, the company Construct Data GmbH offers
exhibitors entries in trade fair catalogues. We would like to inform you
that when making catalogues for our own fair Collector, Progres Partners
Advertising s.r.o. acts wholly independently, and it has no connection
whatsoever with the company Construct Data Verlag GmbH, which operates the
Internet page Fair Guide. We have not permitted this company to use our
name or trademarks in their advertising. In the case of the published
advertisement of the company Construct Data GmbH, this is not our official
trade fair catalogue nor official trade fair catalogue of our trade fair
ordered by us. The unsolicited offer forms sent out were often filled in
mistakenly and signed with the understanding that the entry in the so-called
Fairguide was to be made free of charge. But in reality, costs exceeding
2,900 Euro are evident from the text in fine print. As the Association of
the German Trade Fair Industry (AUMA) has informed, on the basis of the
court ruling issued, there exists no legal claim against the customer,
even in the eventuality that he signed the offer form. You can receive
more detailed information on the ruling at

BC PHILATELIC SOCIETY
PLANS VANPEX 2006
This year’s theme: “Three Kings for Canada”. The theme of VANPEX 2006,
“Three Kings for Canada,” recalls the year 1936, when three separate
monarchs served as monarchs for what was then the Dominion of Canada. The
national-level stamp show is scheduled for September 8-10 in Coquitlam,
BC, a suburb of Vancouver. It is hoped that many of the show’s 180 exhibit
frames will feature collections relating to the “Three Kings” theme.
Bourse Chair Jim Miller reports that the VANPEX bourse is already sold
out, and that there is a waiting list. Twenty stamp dealers have rented
all 29 dealer tables. Two additional tables are reserved for Canada Post,
which has been invited to attend...

Trade fair Collector in 2005 on dates Sept.
16.-18th
The
eighth annual international trade fair Collector will be held in Prague at
the same exhibition ground and in the same exhibition hall on the dates
16th – 18th September 2005. The organising firm Progres Partners
Advertising guarantees that it will be on at least the same level as last
year’s event, which most exhibitors and visitors praised highly.
Jindrich Jirasek 13.12.2004 |
Every seventh visitor is from abroad
As we have already informed,
at the last event in 2004, the organisers of the trade fair Collector
organised a survey of visitor makeup. From the survey of a sample of 271
recipients addressed at random it was found that 14.8% of visitors came
from abroad. This means that an average of every seventh visitor to the
trade fair was a foreigner. Naturally, they mostly came from neighbouring
countries – Poland, Slovakia, Austria and Germany. But visitors from far
more distant places came to the trade fair – from Slovenia, Great Britain,
Spain, Russia, Switzerland, Belgium and also from Thailand, China and
Japan. There was a total of 12,155 visitors at the last Collector.
Jindrich Jirasek 13.12.2004 |
Czech Mint satisfied
The
Czech Mint first participated at the trade fair Collector as an exhibitor
in 2003. During its first appearance it was satisfied, but this year’s
participation exceeded all expectations. As the director of the mint, ing.
Jan Vízek, said after the trade fair, “revenues for goods sold were even
higher than last year, and we also had many interesting and useful
discussions with exhibitors and mints from other countries. I believe that
the trade fair Collector has become one of the most important European
collecting trade fairs”. In 2005, the Czech Mint will naturally return to
the trade fair.
Jindrich Jirasek 13.12.2004 |
Union of the Czech Philatelists at trade fair
Last year, the officials of the Union of the Czech Philatelists (UCP)
expressed great satisfaction with the trade fair Collector. In a letter of
thanks to the organisers of the trade fair, the chairman of the union,
Lumír Brendl, wrote that there had been enormous interest on the part of
visitors in the consultation services at the stand of the UCP. Many
representatives of philatelic federations from abroad came to the trade
fair, and the Federation talked to them. Amongst them was a member of the
executive committee of the Federation of Israeli Philatelists, M. Kremener,
with whom the future participation of Israeli philatelists at the trade
fair was discussed.
Jindrich Jirasek 13.12.2004 |
Free appraisal service at trade fair
Every
year, a free consultation service is available to visitors in all fields
of collecting. In the field of minerals and precious stones, the service
is traditionally provided by the court appointed appraiser Karel Mařík
from the Prague firm Mineral & Gem Collection. Every year, more and more
visitors come to his stand. In 2002, there were 18, last year there were
26, and during the last event 32 people were interested in the service.
There often arise curious situations during the appraisal of minerals,
jewellery or precious stones. Last year a gentleman stood before the
exhibition stand for a while before asking whether he was in the right
place for a decision and whether he had a diamond or not. He showed a
gentleman’s gold (brass) ring with a solitary stone of considerable size.
Following negative test results, he said that he had thought so too, but
that he would come back. A few minutes later he was back, and he tipped
out several small loose stones from a piece of crumpled up paper which
were “definitely supposed to be diamonds”. The test results were negative
once more. After a moment’s hesitation, he took it on board calmly and
said that he would be back. He returned, but not alone. He had brought a
lady with him, who he submitted for tests on the diamonds and jewels that
she was wearing. The situation became slightly critical and became visibly
worse after the discovery that the lady didn’t have a single diamond on
her. It took a lot of explaining, but in the end the pair understood that
the appraisal service provided did not consist of turning glass into
diamonds.

Record in the field of telephone cards
In the field of telephone cards, Collector is becoming one of the largest
and most frequented events in Central Europe. At the last trade fair,
exhibitors from 18 countries offered cards, which is the largest number
yet in the seven-year history: they came from Belorussia, Bulgaria,
France, Croatia, Japan, South Africa, Lithuania, Latvia, Hungary, Germany,
Poland, Romania, Russia, Greece, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey and,
naturally, the Czech Republic.

CHINESE FAMILY NAMES
China issued a set of 128 stamps on November 18, 2004 on Chinese family
names. The issue is sponsored by the Chinese Culture Research Institute. A
1982 government survey was used to select the most common surnames or
family names, which account for nearly 90 percent of the population. These
have been used on 100 stamps. The remaining 28 stamps feature the
historical names include figures such as Yandi (Red Emperor) and Huangdi (Yellow
Emperor). Li (plum) is one of the most common family name and makes up
about 8 percent of the Chinese population.

McCANN ACCEPTS NEW WASHNGTON 2006 POST
Dr. Peter McCann, international exhibitor and judge, former APS president,
and current W2006 Director, has been appointed chairman of the newly spun-off
Washington 2006 Competitive Exhibit Selection Committee. The principal
duty of the committee is to select the competitive exhibits for Washington
2006. Applications are expected to outnumber frames by a factor of two or
three. McCann will work closely with John Lievsay, Commissioner General,
who continues as liaison with all commissioners. Charlie Peterson will
assist McCann in using FIP-sponsored software and records from previous
FIP exhibitions to ensure compliance with their regulations. Peterson had
previously headed the combined Jury and Exhibit Selection Committees. The
Washington 2006 Management Committee decided that realigning the groups
would allow each chairman to better focus on their respective mission. In
addition to chairing the Jury Committee, Charlie continues to solicit
world-class philatelic rarities, special collections and Court of Honor
material for display at W2006. All three men hold positions with the FIP,
the international philatelic federation based in Zurich, Switzerland.
McCann is a vice-president, Peterson is a director, and Lievsay is a
member of the FIP Fight Against Forgeries committee. Exhibitors are urged
to apply early to Washington 2006. Although the deadline for submission is
several months away, response from U.S. exhibitors continues to exceed
expectations. The U.S. Commissioners are: George J. Kramer, 199 Charles

ILLEGAL ISSUES OF GAMBIA
Maria Libera maria.libera@upu.int of WADP/UPU informs that a circular has
just been published at the request of Gambia denouncing illegal stamps

postal administration of Gambia, but which have no such authorization. Its

administrations are therefore urged not to accept in their systems postal

continuing with the assistance of the administration's philatelic agent.

WADP appeals to the philatelic community to continue to be extremely
vigilant regarding the presence of illegal stamps, in particular on the
Internet, at stamp shows and trade fairs and in various publications. WADP
also renew their appeal for assistance to the philatelic community to
receive as much material as possible that is on the market that is or may
be doubtful in nature and which requires investigation. This helps WADP to
provide guidance and assistance to the countries concerned. It is
important that the stamp collectors check the listing of the legal issues
(through www.wnstamps.ch website) and double-check beforehand the
authenticity of the stamps they want to purchase.

New WASHINGTON 2006 Web Site Design Unveiled
The web site for Washington 2006, the
international exhibition scheduled for May 27-June 3, 2006 at the
Washington, DC Convention Center, has been completely redesigned. It can
be viewed at
http://www.washington-2006.org Randy L. Neil of Neil Creative Media
took on the challenge of giving the show's web presence a new look and
making it easier to navigate. An initial prototype was presented to and
approved by W2006 officers in August. Work on the final product began soon
thereafter. It has been online since mid-October. Neil has since accepted
the position of webmaster, taking over from Doug Lehmann, who held the
post since the first web site went up in 1998. Doug was recently named
chief administrator of the exhibitor's bin room. "A redesign was always in
our plans to take place about two years before the event," says W2006
Media Communications chairman Tom Fortunato. "The Washington 2006 web site
has been a collaborative effort from the start. Doug laid the groundwork,
and Randy's new look continues to set the standard other international
philatelic exhibition sites should emulate now and into the future." Much
can be found on the web site. Visitors will be interested in learning
about show registration and area hotel discounts. A current listing of
attending dealers, postal administrations and societies is there as well.
Exhibitors from around the world will find details about applying for the
exhibition, including The Bulletin and national commissioner contact
information. Advertisers will find several options in both print and
electronic formats. Unlike other international exhibitions, individual and
society memberships financially support Washington 2006. The show is
recognized by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3)
organization, allowing donors to take a tax deduction to the fullest
extent of the law. Contributors should bear this in mind as 2004 comes to
a close.
Questions about Washington 2006 may be emailed to info@washington-2006.org,
or by writing to Washington 2006, PO Box 2006, Ashburn, VA 20146-2006 USA.

Collector Prague 2004: Record Broken Once Again!
Every year the number of exhibitors and visitors rises at the
international trade fair Collector in Prague. This year’s seventh
annual event, which was held from 10th to 12th September was no
exception. A record number of 220 exhibitors from 34 countries came
to the trade fair, and 12 thousand visitors came.
The trade fair moved to a different hall on the Prague
Exhibition Grounds which is one thousand square metres larger than
the hall where it had been held before. The exhibitors thus occupied
a gross area of 4700 m2. This year, women had free admission to the
trade fair for the first time.

The handbook and unpriced catalogue published by PRAGOLINE in Prague

German except for a two-page abstract at the back of the book. The
major intent of the book is correct existing foreign publications

STAMP MADE OF WOOD
It may sound funny and next to impossible, a stamp made of real wood;
but the Swiss Post is not yet at its end of innovation! After the
issue of round self-adhesive postage stamps to commemorate Sydeney
Olympics (2000), the first-ever embroidery stamp (2000), stamp with
the flavour of real Swiss Chocholate (2001), stamps depicting roses
with the real fragrance of rose (2002), the Swiss Post has again
demonstrated its rich heritage of innovation!
This new stamp of wood will be issued in limited quantity on 7th
September 2004. It will be of rectangular shape with dimensions 40 x
50 mm and will be 0.7 mm thick. It is made of high quality fir. The
word "HELVETIA" and the denomination "500" (5 Swiss Francs) will
appear on the stamp and the typical year rings of the wood will
decorate the stamp. It will be self-adhesive. It will be on sale at
all post offices and philatelic sales points and will also be on
sale in the 2004 year-set.
The announcement of this novelty was not disclosed till 5th August.
Usually there is a special occasion for the issue of such "out-of-way"
stamp, for example the Swiss National Exhibition, which is held
after every 4 years. Also it is not clear how the Swiss Post decided
to choose such a material, which is brittle and a stamp made of wood
would not "servive" the shocks and rough handling, including the
pressure applied by the obliterator for canceling it!
The Swiss Post claims that they wanted to remind to the Swiss and to
the world that although Switzerland is in reality a rich nation, it
is surprisingly very poor in natural resources! Very few people in
the world know this fact. One of their great natural resources is "Water"
and now also "Wood". The stamp presented by Swiss Post together with
representatives from the Swiss Agency for the Environment, Forests
and Landscape (SAFEL) and the Swiss Wood Industry Federation (Lignum).
Swiss Post demonstrates the many possible uses for Swiss wood and
and its significance for a tiny country like Switzerland. This
wooden stamp is likely to arouse the public interest, not only in
Switzerland but all over the world.
According to the Swiss philatelists Swiss Post will better their
revenue by selling this stamp mainly to the philatelists and it is
believed that most of these stamps will never be used for franking
letters. This stamp with denomination of 5 Swiss Francs are used for
paying the postage(plus registration fees) of a registered letter in
Switzerland. There will not be a block of four stamps, as it was in
case of the reputed embroidery stamp. The embroidery stamp, sold at
5 Swiss Francs is now catalogued at a value of 12 Swiss Francs, and
the block of four sold at 20 Swiss Francs is catalogued at 350.-
Swiss Francs. Perhaps the wooden stamp may also face a similar
“fate" in future! Swiss Post issued about 1.3 million embroidery
stamps, of which there were about 10 000
blocks of four. Most probably the number of Wood Stamps will be much
lower than that of the embroidery stamp. Swiss Post normally
declares the figures of stamps issued after about a year and a half.
It is said that Swiss Post collected a revenue of about three to
four millions of Francs by issuing the embroidery stamp, most of
these stamps found their way in the collections of philatelists all
over the globe, so the covers franked with these stamps and gone
through the postal channel are scare and this will determine their
price. The marketing strategy will surely reward Swiss Post, even
when these wooden stamps will not be sold and used as normal postage
stamps but will be treasured as a novelty world over. The embroidery
stamp was "copied" by other countries, perhaps this wooden stamp
will have its "rivals" in days to come!

AUSTRIA HONORS ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER
Austria Post will
issue a commemorative stamp on Arnold Schwarzenegger in the
Austrians Living Abroad series on July 30, 2004 in the denomination
of Euro 1. The stamp designed by Hannes Margreiter is printed in
photogravure in the quantity of 600,000.
Arnold Schwarzenegger was born on July 30, 1947 in Graz Thal, the
son of a gendarme. He discovered bodybuilding while he was still at
school and began to train regularly at the age of 15. In 1966, he
was elected "Mr. Europe" and in 1967 he was elected the youngest
"Mr. Universe" in London. By 1980, he had won the title "Mr.
Universe" five times and "Mr. Olympia" seven times. These successes
made him one of the most important individuals in the history of
bodybuilding. Schwarzenegger emigrated to the
USA in 1968. In 1973, he began to study business management and
economics, graduating in 1980. He acquired American citizenship in
1983, and in 1986 he married the journalist Maria Shriver, a niece
of John F. Kennedy. The couple has four children.
His well-trained body led him to the film industry. In his
first role in 1970, in "Hercules in New York", his voice had to be
synchronised because of his very strong accent. Schwarzenegger
achieved an international reputation 12 years later with the film
"Conan the Barbarian" (1982). Films such as "Terminator", "Total
Recall", "Kindergarten Cop" and "True Lies" made him one of the
highest-earning Hollywood actors. In his honour, the newly renovated
Graz "Liebenau" stadium in his home country was renamed the
"Arnold-Schwarzenegger Stadium". Politically,
this moderate Republican was for a long time relatively inactive
(apart from his function as consultant for American sport). On
October 7, 2003, Arnold Schwarzenegger (nicknamed by many the "Governator")
was elected governor, and on November 17, 2003 before 7,500 invited
guests he was inaugurated as the 38th Governor of the US state of
California.

JOINT ISSUE - DEFINITIONS AND NEW
CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM
A proposal for a new classification system for
joint issues was made in August 2003. Several comments from
collectors helped to refine the definitions and the classification
system itself. The deeper we go in details, the higher becomes the
number of sub-classes. At a certain stage it becomes obvious that
some sub-classes will have to merge again, as otherwise, most of the
sub-classes will contain only one example of an issue. There are
still some issues that could be reconsidered, but overall we think
we came to something coherent and probably also reliable for future
issues...

INTERNATIONAL FAIR COLLECTOR PRAGUE
2004
World
known mints are returning
Every
year, at its large stand the firm Schoeler Münzhandel from Vienna
offers coins from several of the world’s mints. This year will be
no exception. As director Elmar Schmid confirmed for us, this year
visitors will have a chance to buy new items from the following
mints: British Royal Mint, Die Deutschen Münzprägestätten, Mint
of Finland, Monnaie de Paris, Münze Österreich, Royal Australian
Mint, Royal Canadian Mint, Royal Dutch Mint and South African Mint.
The Swiss Mint and United States Mint are still in negotiations. The
firm Schoeller Münzhandel is very active at the trade fair
Collector, as it is on the entire Czech market, and several years
ago it even established a customer centre in the Czech Republic.
Great interest of Portugal Post
Last year for the first time the Portugal Post made a
presentation at the trade fair, and apart from its activity of
regular issues, it also offered philatelic material associated with
the Euro football competition. This year the Portugal Post will be
back at the trade fair, and once again it will have beautiful
postage and revenue stamps. As the director of the philately
department Luis M. Andrade, confirmed,
the post has a tremendous interest in cooperation with philatelic
traders and collectors in the Czech Republic and in the entire
central European region. This year they will continue issuing stamps
commemorating the football championship (for example, in the shape
of a football). Shortly
before the finale, it has a great surprise prepared. A stamp prepared
for the occasion of the accession of ten countries to the European
Union will be of interest for our philatelists.
The trade fair is once again being held under the aegis of the
Czech Numismatic Society
Consultants of the Czech Numismatic Society have appraised
several tens of thousands of coins, medals, bank notes, orders and
decorations which visitors have brought over the last six years of
the trade fair. The society, which has forty branches throughout the
republic, accepted patronage of the trade fair during the first
event in 1998, and every year it helps collectors and amateurs to
appraise the material they bring free of charge. And every year the
CNS also enriches the trade fair with an accompanying exhibition.
Last year it was the Greatest Inflation in the History of Man
(Hungary), in the year 2002 it consisted of a collection of Bills of
Exchange, and three years ago it was medals issued by the society
since 1924.
Japanese association at trade fair for first time
In
last year’s last edition of the German magazine TeleSammler, which
focuses on collecting telephone cards, there was a two-page item
praising the last Collector trade fair, because the Prague trade
fair is one of the events where there is still a representative
offer of telephone cards. And so both buyers and sellers enjoy
Prague. News of the success of the trade fair has reached as far as
Japan. The result is an application from the Association of
Collectors of Japanese Telephone Cards which was sent from Tokyo to
the organisers for this year’s event by the president of the
association, Hidetaka Matsuda.
Czech
Post at trade fair
Česká
po¹ta s.p. (Czech Post) was patron of the trade fair Collector
during its second annual event in 1999, and one year before this it
was one of the co-organisers of the international exhibition Praga,
which is held in the Czech capital once every ten years. At the
Collector trade fair, its stand is one of the largest, and in
addition to the sale of philatelic material, at the stand it also
ensures commemorative rubber stamping and other services for
philatelists. This year the Czech Post (OZ DOS Postfila) issued its
own category A postcard for the trade fair for the first time.
Kremnica
Mint with new items
This
year the Slovak Kremnica Mint will exhibit for the third time at the
Collector trade fair. For this year it is preparing many new
stamping, be they commemorative coins or medals. For example, upon
the occasion of the accession of Slovakia to the European Union, the
mint is preparing a commemorative bimetal coin (gold, platinum) with
a value of ten thousand Slovak crowns, a commemorative silver medal
with a value of SKK 200 and medals in silver and gold. All items
will be issued in May.
More mineral this year
This year more firms will be joining the traditional exhibitors
in the field of mineralogy such as the firms Mineral Metal and
